In 2013 when I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis I found a book at Barnes and Noble called The First Year Rheumatoid Arthritis. Today the book is dated but the author, M.E.A. McNeil, made several very good suggestions and it is worth reading. My favorite said it would be very helpful if we were to keep a journal.

It was a very helpful suggestion for me. Every morning when I had my coffee, I would write in my journal. I wrote in long hand and I enjoyed, at the time, writing in pencil. Previously, I had read Julia Cameron’s book The Artist’s Way. Writing three pages every morning came natural to me.

I kept notes on my progress and on the information I was learning about RA. Having been a critical care nurse, I wanted to learn everything I could about what was happening to me. This book, the first in a series of three, is a selection from my journal and from articles on my website, Https://marysarthritis.com .

When I was diagnosed, I wanted to know what other people were feeling. This book is a collection of essays about what I learned and what I experienced.

The first section gives an overview of rheumatoid arthritis. (Some prefer to call it rheumatoid disease because it is a disease that involves more than the joints.) What it is. Symptoms. Treatment. Basic drugs. Main complication. Your rheumatologist. There are sections marked journal that relate my experiences with RA. A section called RA Body that talks about RA nodules, RA eyes and similar topics.

A section called Day to Day about how I manage. There is a section called distraction, a tool I frequently use. A section called Home Work about choices and tools. Pain management. Treatment discussion. Finally, the lighter side of RA, the early treatment of RA and a story about Augustus Renoir, a famous painter who developed RA in his fifties.
