It features over 250 photographs and documents from the first 110 years of confirmation classes and reunions held at the corner of Port and Burgundy Streets in New Orleans.The years 1840 through 1950, capture St. Paul’s emergence in the nineteenth century and continue with the congregation’s progress into the first half of the twentieth. Rev. Christian G. Moedinger is credited with the documentation of oral histories and early church records. In the years that followed, an extensive photograph collection was care-fully preserved by my great-grandfather, Rev. Gottfried J. Wegener. These historically-minded church leaders have provided St. Paul Lutheran Church with the comprehensive archive available to genealogical researchers to this day. Now, in the 21st century, a virtual record of the St. Paul archive is available on the web.The earliest confirmation documents in the St. Paul collection cover the years 1845 to 1856. These records by Pastors Schrenk and Buhler are included in this publication. Hundreds of pages of meticulously handwritten records by Moedinger and Wegener are difficult to decipher unless you are fluent in the German language and can navigate the old German script. Therefore, only representative examples of these pages illustrate this publication in order to properly accommodate the extensive collection of vintage photographs and certificates. Many confirmands had their individual portraits taken by one of several local photographers in a studio setting. St. Paul’s archive includes a number of these vintage photographs featuring ancestors of many current St. Paul families. They have not been available for decades.
