All of that made the story convoluted, but what is without question is that hundreds of Africans destined for a lifetime of slavery were on the ship when it was captured. They had been taken from their families and villages in Africa, then marched overland by cannibalistic warlords. After being sold on the beach, they were forced into the dark, dank hold of a ship and endured rough seas, pirate attacks, and shipwreck. Dozens died on the voyage, and when their ship was captured, nobody was sure what to do with them.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe surviving captives endured treacherous lies, corruption, and the moral failure of people who considered themselves civilized. They forced the children and young adults into slave labor on the southern plantations for over seven years while their legal battle played out, and their case was heard before the Supreme Court at a time when a vast majority of the Supreme Court justices who decided the case owned slaves themselves.
