In 1962, after a back injury leaves him unable to do hard labor, Jake Applegate decides he has had enough of bosses, bills, and the hard dust of Barstow, California. With little money and a head full of stubborn hope, he moves his wife and children north to the wilderness near Simmons, Ontario, determined to live off the land and build a freer life.
