Film noir goes country in Clay Pigeons, and the small-town vibe found onscreen certainly translates into a well-meaning soundtrack of alt-country acts and C&W standards. The best cuts are the less familiar ones: Old 97's "Timebomb," Firewater's "Another Perfect Catastrophe," and Collapsis's title track. Each tune sounds fresh and new, but all have that familiar twang. Filling out the compilation are tracks by Tonic, the Verve Pipe, even Lyle Lovett and Pat Boone. This isn't the typical soundtrack for a movie about a serial killer, but--thanks to a classic Jimmy Wakely cut and the aforementioned up-and-comers--it's better than average. --Jason Verlinde
