Fanny Hill (or Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure), written by John Cleland in 1748, is an epistolary novel framed as two letters from the titular character detailing her past life as a London prostitute. After her parents die, a young and naive Fanny travels from the countryside to the city, where she is quickly tricked into working at a brothel. She manages to escape with her first love, Charles, but is left completely destitute when his wealthy father discovers the affair and sends him away. Forced to survive, Fanny becomes a kept mistress to several men before joining a more refined, discreet brothel run by a woman named Mrs. Cole. Throughout her various sexual exploits and adventures, she manages to amass a considerable fortune after inheriting the estate of an elderly benefactor. Ultimately, Fanny retires from her life as a courtesan and miraculously reunites with her true love, Charles. The novel concludes with the two marrying, allowing Fanny to leave her past behind and live out her days as a wealthy, respectable, and happily devoted wife.
