The purpose of this book is to raise awareness of the severe form of math learning disability, Developmental Dyscaculia (DD). DD is a neurological disorder inherited by one or both parents, and therefore is not the result of brain injury. DD is not classified as a disease, so it is not taught in medical schools, which means most doctors have never heard of it. However, it is estimated to affect between 4% - 7% of children in the U.S. alone, which is 1-2 children in a classroom of 30 students.
This learning disorder is left undiagnosed and untreated in the majority of cases, leaving students with a lifelong aversion to learning mathematics, which can limit career choices and prevent students from reaching their full potential. There is hope, however, in both specialized education, and brain-based diagnosis and treatment, that may allow children to reach further into their potential.
