Silent Inventions: The Untold Story of Genius, Loss, and a Stolen Legacy is the true story of Archie Wilder Farrell, a brilliant man whose inventions helped shape the world we live in today, yet whose name and legacy were nearly lost to history.

Archie died at the age of forty-one, leaving behind his wife, Clara Mertz Farrell, and their two young children, just six weeks and one year old. In the years that followed, the inventions he left behind were stolen, along with the recognition, opportunities, and future that should have belonged to him and his family.

Clara was left to raise her children alone through the hardships of the Great Depression. Heartbreak and silence surrounded Archie’s memory, and over time, the story of his life and genius faded from those who had known him best.

As Archie’s granddaughter, I, Kathleen Reilly DeFalco, was determined to preserve and reconstruct his story through extensive research. Drawing from records found through the United States Patent Office, attorney letters, old newspaper clippings, the Hinckley Historical Society, and the Elburn Public Library, I pieced together the life, loss, and legacy of a man whose contributions deserve to be remembered.
