1940s. Fifty-three writers—all of us now in our 80s-- contribute insights in a way that girlhood
receives as much attention as boys’ sports. Growing up in a small town meant freedom and
safety, even as the nation maintained a high degree of military preparedness in the Cold War
against Communism. We experienced momentous changes as we went through school in the
1950s. Family farming was declining while automobiles, television, and rock ‘n roll were
booming. Both the expansion of higher education and the draft lottery promoted individual
mobility and loosened family ties. Even teenage romance was carried out with regard for college
and military service. The book ends with our generation’s contributions to an unwinnable war in
