Spike the Bravehearted Dragon
by E. Paul Prendergast

Meet Spike, a little dragon with a big heart.

In a world where dragons are expected to be fierce and are judged by how loud they roar, Spike feels out of place. He isn’t like the others. Spike prefers kindness. He plays the accordion, helps others, and never wants to scare anyone. Because he’s different, the other dragons tease him.

Feeling lonely, Spike wonders if anyone will ever appreciate him for who he truly is. But when it matters most, Spike discovers that bravery doesn’t always look the way we expect.

Spike the Bravehearted Dragon is a heartfelt, beautifully illustrated children’s story about embracing differences, finding inner courage, and realizing that being yourself is more than enough. Through Spike’s journey, young readers learn that kindness, perseverance, and heart can be just as powerful as strength.

Perfect for:

  • Children who feel “different” or left out

  • Teaching empathy, confidence, and self-worth

  • Bedtime reading and classroom discussions

  • Fans of gentle, meaningful dragon tales

This inspiring story reminds readers of all ages that true bravery comes from within, and that every dragon has their own special spark.

From the Author & Illustrator:

This story is written in memory of my mother, who taught me that it’s okay to be different.

The earliest version of Spike the Bravehearted Dragon began when I was very young. My mom and I created the first version of this story together to help me understand the world, especially during times when I was picked on for being different. That message stayed with me throughout my life.

Many years later, I discovered Jump the Moon, a nonprofit art studio that gave me the confidence to finally bring Spike’s story to life. Through that journey, I discovered abilities I didn’t know I had. I never thought of myself as an artist, but I surprised myself by not only writing this book, but illustrating it as well.

This story teaches the lesson I needed most as a child:
Being different doesn’t make you any less valuable. You are good. You are important. You matter just the way you are.

My hope is that Spike’s journey helps everyone see the courage inside themselves, especially those who feel a little different.
