John Mason is an extreme rock climber and mountaineer. When his wife dies giving birth to their child, Mason cannot deal with the tragedy. I have read this novel from the earliest draft and can tell you you’re in for an entertaining read. It is well-plotted — not as far fetched as you may imagine — with a cast of characters you may recognize. The action takes place on familiar ground between Calgary and the mountains, Suicide Wall on Yamnuska being the scene of the shocking denouement. Having read a lot of mountaineering fiction, I find many books come unstuck in their climbing descriptions. But not here. Not only is Steve eminently qualified (he’s made about 150 first ascents on Yam and elsewhere in North America), he is one of a few writers able to write hard climbing in a passionate yet terse style that rings absolutely true. For non-climbers, a glossary of climbing terms is provided.

The story’s main character is a John Mason, a rock climber and mountaineer who discovers a terrorist plot to destroy strategic infrastructure in Canada and the US. The book is an entertaining page-turner and unlike other stories that feature climbers, Suicide Wall offers accurate climbing scenes. If this becomes available as an audio book, it will be perfect for a long road trip.
