The Very Reverend John Bartholomew was born in New York. He was educated in Catholic schools and earned a B.A. in East Asian Studies from St. John’s University in Jamaica, NY. While living in Japan, he was received into Orthodoxy. Upon returning to New York, he studied at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in Crestwood, NY, where he earned a Master of Divinity degree and was ordained to the priesthood. He has since served parishes in Australia, Japan, Canada, and the United States.
Alexander Nikolaevich Bakulevsky (1886–1972) was born in Russia and initially pursued a military career. He is believed to have moved to Japan in 1916 and later fought with the White Army during the Russian Civil War. He eventually settled in Tokyo, where he eventually stability. From 1953 to 1972, he served as secretary to the four Metropolitans who led the Japanese Orthodox Church: Irinei, Nikon, Ambrose, and Vladimir.
Dmitry Matveevich Pozdneev (1865–1937) conducted significant research Japan, where he befriended Archbishop Nicholas, who valued his work, including his 1908 Russian-Japanese dictionary. After returning to Russia, he helped establish the Practical Oriental Academy and continued his academic career. He was executed by the Soviets in 1937, but his contributions to oriental studies and Japanese history have left a lasting impact.
