Those Kids is an authentic and personal account of court-involved boys who came to live in a boys home named Telos Youth Outposts (Telos). For over two decades, Telos engaged the children entrusted to it in challenging wilderness adventures—whitewater canoeing and rafting, backpacking, mountaineering, rock-climbing, and snow-camping—to inspire them to make positive choices, become educated, and live their destinies as good citizens.
In this book, you will travel into the hearts and minds of boys with histories of neglect, abuse, abandonment, and other emotional trauma. Learn how these often mistreated and traumatized boys, growing up mostly without the support of a family, lived, grew, and often thrived while living at Telos.

The author, John Hiatt, grew up on the edge of far-northern Maine’s Allagash Wilderness, where, in his youth, he developed a passion for wilderness adventure. John earned both a BA and an MA in the psychologies from Humboldt State University. Besides founding and directing Telos, he has worked in law enforcement and child protection. John brings his knowledge, experience, education, and a lifetime of wilderness adventuring with youth to this real but sometimes gut-wrenching book.

One of John’s goals in writing this book was to offer concepts those persons involved with children can bring to their own work. John can be reached at: johndhiatt@gmail.com.
