This is the story of my second career which was spent in the world of finance.
It started with a leap-in-the-dark, moving from being an academic to wearing a colourful jacket as an Open Outcry trader in a crowded pit at LIFFE. A series of generally fortuitous events and chance encounters led me on an interesting and at times challenging route through London, New York, Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo, from options trading to financial regulator, risk manager to financial engineer, through Hedge Funds, US, European and Japanese investment banks.
In what follows I’ve tried to pull out some of the interesting, amusing, confusing and hopefully insightful incidents I’ve run into along the way. I also give my views of certain market characteristics, some risk management lessons and how the MPC, QE and stress testing might be improved. I hope you enjoy the ride.
