Second edition. This book is geared toward the history and genealogy of Pittsylvania County, Virginia. It gives an insight to the degree of participation in the Civil War, and the tremendous cost to the families. The book begins with a list of the Infantries, Cavalries, and Artilleries that Pittsylvania men joined. Next, a list of the major battles in which these regiments participated. Third, the crux of the book, is a list of men who were living in Pittsylvania County in 1860. The list includes about 3,700 men, most born between 1818 and 1846, and makes note of those who served in the Confederate States Army, as well as those who aided in the war effort by sales of goods and service. Amazingly, it was revealed about 75% of the men listed would join the Army. Sadly, about 23% of those would perish in the war.
There were about 25 companies that were recruited in Pittsylvania County, but prior research hinted that the total would exceed that. The findings were more astounding than I imagined. At the completion of the 1st Edition, I had discovered that men living in Pittsylvania in 1860 would join at least 117 different companies. In the four years since, additional research raised that total to 140 different companies. I was also able to find over 100 more men on the list who served in the Army, and over 50 more men who had died in the war. The increased findings warranted a 2nd Edition.
