De Profundis, written at the end of Wilde's imprisonment, is a bitter, sultry, hurtful, and passionate work.

“Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.”

De Profundis (Latin: "from the depths") is a letter that Oscar Wilde wrote to "Bosie" (Lord Alfre d Douglas) while imprisoned at Reading Gaol. In 1905, five years after Wilde's passing, it was first published.

Wilde describes how their past connection and lavish lifestyle ultimately resulted in Wilde's trial and incarceration for gross indecency. He criticizes Lord Alfred's weakness in caving into such desires as well as his conceit. Wilde describes his spiritual growth while incarcerated and his affiliation with Jesus Christ, who he describes as an individualist and romantic artist. The salutation "Dear Bosie" opens the letter, and "Your Affectionate Friend" closes it.
