Labrador is a remote region of Canada, with only a quarter of Alaska’s population density. Bordered by the province of Quebec and the North Atlantic, this wild land is crossed by just one through road—the Trans-Labrador Highway. For over 700 miles, a lone traveler must chiefly rely on his own provisions, aptitude, and determination to arrive safely dockside in the village of Blanc-Sablon. For a motorcyclist, beginning from the opposite edge of the continent, the challenge is even greater. And back in 2014, before it was all paved, there was a lot more mud and loose rock!
In his previous book, Ramsell chronicled his two-wheeled journey to Deadhorse, near Alaska's Arctic coast. That had entailed riding 500 miles per day for 12 consecutive days. In this third memoir, success will require the author to average at least 600 miles a day—for over two weeks! Of course, hundreds of miles of gravel road are again an integral part of the plan, and two ocean-going ferries will need to be boarded on schedule. Plus, he’s arranged to visit some far-flung family!
But East to Blanc-Sablon: End of the Trans-Labrador is more than a senseless race against the clock. Like any worthwhile travelogue, Ramsell details both struggles and joys, and relates his many encounters with folks along the way. Additionally, solo exploration provides ample opportunity for reflection—alternately manifesting as a dragging anchor or an energizing boost!
