In 1890, a young boy is born in Croatia. His parents are farmers in the village of Zavalje. His name is Josip, and they call him Joso. After the turn of the century this boy grows into a young man, determined to make his way in the world. He leaves his family at the age of 17 to journey to America, in search of a better life. Through a harrowing voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, in a new land having to learn to speak a different language, he finds work in many different places. His road is hard and long, and he sometimes feels like giving up. But he persists, and over time becomes a successful citizen in the U.S., finding love and starting a family, and leaving a lasting impression on the fabric of this land we call America.
