During the German occupation of Poland in World War II, seventeen-year-old Victor Bik was arrested by Nazi authorities for his involvement with the Polish underground resistance. What followed was a harrowing journey through the brutal Nazi concentration camp system, including imprisonment at Gross-Rosen concentration camp and later Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.
Inside the camps, prisoners faced starvation, forced labor, disease, and constant brutality. Survival was uncertain, and each day brought new hardships. Yet through determination, resilience, and an unbreakable will to live, Victor endured the unimaginable until liberation.
Freedom did not immediately restore what war had taken. Like many survivors of Nazi imprisonment, Victor faced the challenge of rebuilding a life from the ruins of war. Through perseverance and hope, he eventually immigrated to the United States, where he built a new life devoted to family, education, and the freedoms once denied to him.
Written by his son Christopher Bik, with contributions from grandson Jonathan Bik, Light Beyond the Wire combines personal testimony, historical context, and family photographs to preserve a powerful true story of suffering, courage, and survival.
