A sustained guitar note, a bassline's gentle nudge propelling a hushed rhythm, unraveling poetic imagery phrase by phrase; a snare's occasional snap offering punctuation. This is how Boston's Karate began their third album, 1998's . Perhaps this was a response to their previous album's aggressive punk tones, or maybe they aimed to capture the drowsy twilight of a crisp fall day in a college town. However, Karate was known for their stylistic adventurousness and unpredictability, as seen in 'There Are Ghosts'. The band's lineup was also fluid; after expanding to a quartet and using dual guitars on 1997's 'In Place of Real Insight', founding member Eamonn Vitt left to pursue medical school. Karate continued as a trio, with Jeff Goddard's bass work guiding them through the smoky jazz and sun-kissed blues influences that permeated their discography.
