This book is about an award-winning entrepreneur who suffered from bouts of depression. One day, he attempted to suicide by walking into a river—fully dressed in a business suit. At the last minute, he decided to save himself and swam back to shore. Rise Above details John Melnick’s difficult childhood with a controlling mother, his business rise, his bouts with depression, his attempted suicide, his recovery in hospital, and his ongoing strategies to stay mentally healthy.

“Rise Above by John Melnick is courageous, inspiring, and heartwarming. John boldly takes readers through the experience of his downward trajectory, attempting suicide, and then finding the supports, tools and insights for recovering. This book is highly recommended for people experiencing depression and for those who love them.”
Kathleen Thompson, PhD, MSW, RSW
Co-Chair, National Mental Health Inclusion Network (NMHIN)

"In this potent memoir/self-help hybrid, John Melnick turns his darkest day into a beacon for others. He doesn’t promise quick fixes, but rather a compassionate guide through the ongoing process of rebuilding. With every chapter offering both personal narrative and pragmatic steps,
Rise Above resonates deeply, extending a hand to those still finding their way. For anyone navigating depression’s long shadows—or those wondering how best to light the way for others—this book offers a path marked by vulnerability, resilience, and real, doable tools.

This book is a great resource for people currently living with or who has experienced depression or suicidal thoughts. I live with depression and I often feel that I don’t have the ability to recognize it when it creeps back into my life. After reading this book, I know that I can come back to the last couple chapters to remind myself of the tools that can help me get back on track. I would recommend this book to anyone currently living with or who has experienced depression or suicidal thoughts. I personally have never read a book written so openly about someone’s journey with mental health and recovery, nevertheless one written by a male in his 70s. This book is especially beneficial for men to read. There is still a strong stigma that prevents males from talking openly about what’s bothering them. That belief, in turn, can lead to poor mental health and/or anger issues."
