An excerpt from this biography book on Scottie Barnes's story:
Traditionally, basketball is all about players playing their positions and sticking to those roles. Each position has a specialty. Point guards are there to set the offense up and make plays. Shooting guards are secondary ball-handlers and primary scorers. Small forwards are versatile perimeter and inside options. Power forwards play from the high post. And centers are there to be big inside the paint to rebound, block shots, and score close to the basket.
Essentially, players are expected to specialize in the skills their positions require. But there are always some special players who exceed those expectations. They deviate from time to time, adding new, unique touches and adaptations to their roles. Then, those lines get blurred. That is why there are score-first point guards despite the fact that the position usually dictates that the player should prioritize passing. Meanwhile, some all-time small forwards have become do-it-all players capable of making plays and leading a team in scoring. Even centers in the modern NBA have been shooting three-pointers at a high level.
So, while positions may be defined by tradition, nothing is set in stone. When a player incorporates a transcendent talent out of the norm for their role, that often prompts change, ultimately driving the perpetual evolution of the game. As an example, think about how the game changed when Stephen Curry came along and showed how potent an offensive weapon the three-point shot could truly be.
