Ten Days in a Mad-House (Nellie Bly’s Experience on Blackwell’s Island) was written American journalist by Nellie Bly (also Elizabeth Cochrane Seaman) (1864-1922) and published in 1887.
Ten Days in a Mad-house is probably Bly's most famous work. It is a series of articles written by Bly while an undercover journalist for the New York World, faking mental illness at a woman's boarding house so she would be involuntarily committed to an insane asylum. While committed, she then investigated the reports of brutality and neglect at the Women's Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell's Island (now called Roosevelt Island).
The book received widespread acclaim. The combination of her reportage and the release of her content brought her fame and led to a grand jury investigation and financial increase in the Department of Public Charities and Corrections.
