Unboring Egyptian Pyramids Mystery for Kids: Chapter 8: The Sphinx’s Missing Nose

The Great Sphinx of Giza sits guarding the pyramids with the body of a lion and the face of a pharaoh. It measures 240 feet long and 66 feet tall, carved from a single massive limestone outcrop. But something's wrong with its face. The nose is completely gone. Not just eroded or weathered. Violently removed.

The missing nose is huge. Originally, it would have measured about five feet long. You don't accidentally break off five feet of stone nose. Someone deliberately destroyed it. But who? And why would anyone attack one of Egypt's most iconic monuments?

Popular legend blames Napoleon Bonaparte's soldiers. The story claims French troops used the Sphinx's face for target practice during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign in 1798. Cannonballs supposedly blasted the nose right off. This tale has been repeated in books, documentaries, and movies for over 200 years.

There's just one problem. Drawings made before Napoleon ever reached Egypt show the Sphinx already missing its nose. A Danish artist sketched the Sphinx in 1737, clearly showing the damaged face. Napoleon couldn't have destroyed something that was already gone 61 years before he arrived.

The Theories

A religious zealot named Sa'im al-Dahr destroyed the nose in 1378 CE. According to Arab historian al-Maqrizi, who wrote about the event decades later, Sa'im al-Dahr was a Sufi Muslim upset that Egyptian peasants made offerings to the Sphinx hoping for better harvests. He considered this idol worship and decided to end it by destroying the statue's face.
